In this article, we will focus on two of the easiest Latin dance styles to learn: salsa and bachata.
Merengue
Merengue is a lively, upbeat dance style that originated in the Dominican Republic. Characterized by its simple, repetitive steps and its energetic, swinging hips. Merengue can be danced to fast or slow music, and is typically performed in a closed position with a partner. The basic step involves taking small, quick steps in place, alternating between the left and right foot. It’s the best dance beginners, as it is easy to learn and can be danced to a wide variety of music.
Bachata
Bachata is a popular Latin dance and music style that originated in the Dominican Republic in the mid-20th century. Its romantic, sensual moves and its slower, rhythmic tempo. Bachata singers sing about love, heartbreak, and romance, and the dance is typically performed with a partner in a close embrace. The basic step involves taking small, slow steps in place, with a slight hip sway and a slight bounce. Bachata is an easy dance to learn, and is suitable for beginners of all ages.
Salsa
Salsa is a popular Latin dance style that originated in Cuba and Puerto Rico in the 1950s. Its fast, energetic rhythms and its playful, sensual dance moves. Salsa can be danced to a variety of music, including pop, rock, and Latin music. The basic step involves taking small, quick steps in place, alternating between the left and right foot. Salsa is an excellent dance for beginners, as it is easy to learn and can be danced to a wide variety of music.
Tips for Learning Latin Dances
Learning a new dance can be intimidating, especially if you are a beginner. Follow these tips:
Find a good instructor: A good dance instructor can make all the difference in your learning experience. Look for an instructor who is patient, knowledgeable, and who can provide clear explanations and demonstrations of the dance steps.
Practice regularly: Like any skill, dancing requires practice to improve. Set aside time each week to practice your dance steps, either alone or with a partner.
At Toronto Dance Salsa, all our Salsa Nightclub Level 1 classes introduce all 3 styles of dance. We always do 1 hour of Merengue to build confidence, followed by 1 hour of Bachata and then 7 hours of Salsa.
