Who makes pear cider? ›

Red Bank Cider's award winning 5 Star pear cider - or perry as it's traditionally known - is made simply with pears - NEVER from water. It's refreshingly lower in sugar!

Ingredients. Water, pear wine (water, sugar, pear juice concentrate), sugar, pear juice concentrate, carbon dioxide, acid: citric acid, natural flavouring, preservative: potassium sorbate.

It is the product of the fermentation of specific pear varieties, grown historically in Gloucestershire, Herefordshire, Worcestershire and Somerset. Perry tends to be lighter and more floral than cider. 'Pear Cider' is an alternative term for Perry, used in a wide range of styles.

Apple cider and perry compared

It tends to be more delicate than apple cider and sweeter, even stretching to citrus and tropical fruit flavours like guava and pineapple. Bottle-fermented perry becomes a light, sparkling drink that Napoleon allegedly described as "English champagne" (was he having a dig?).

The cider with the most sugar

There's about 61 g of sugar in a 500 ml bottle of Bulmers Toffee Apple, which is over double the recommended amount of free daily sugars. Crazy.

The fruit used to make cider is naturally high in sugar, which is why cider is higher in sugar than beer. As part of the brewing process, yeast is added to the juice to begin fermentation. The method used in the fermentation process generally dictates how much sugar is in the cider.

A cider typically contains a lot more natural sugars than wine, which ultimately makes a substantial difference. Sugar content in cider is around 6% to 15%, while a wine's sugar content rarely exceeds 2%.

Cider alcohol content varies from 1.2% to 8.5% ABV or more in traditional English ciders, and 3.5% to 12% in continental ciders. In UK law, it must contain at least 35% apple juice (fresh or from concentrate), although CAMRA (the Campaign for Real Ale) says that "real cider" must be at least 90% fresh apple juice.
