My family loves snack mix made with cereal and other fun mix ins. We make the traditional party mix, but we also like to change things up and make fun flavor combinations. A friend gave me this recipe for a honey sesame party mix a few years ago. I spent my early 20’s traveling the middle east and honey and sesame is a popular flavor combination in that part of the world. So she knew I would love this variation on a snack mix.

Since honey is the star of the show, you want to make sure you use a premium honey with lots of flavor. This was my first time using Don Victor honey and I was surprised to see the actual honeycomb right inside the jar!

I found the Don Victor honey in one of my favorite aisles to shop in at Walmart – the Hispanic Food aisle. I love looking at the unique products in the international section of Walmart and always find something new to try. I buy my powdered milk to make homemade hot cocoa mix and my favorite caramel sauce made with goats milk in the Hispanic Aisle. Now, I’ll be buying Don Victor honey in that aisle, too. I found the honey on the very top shelf right next to my favorite caramel sauce.

Like most snack mixes, the honey sesame version is easy to make. Start by mixing the cereal, nuts and fruit in a large bowl. You can mix and match to your preferences. I used corn cereal, raw almonds, cashews and dried cherries.

Set the mix aside and melt together the honey, butter, brown sugar and a little salt in a small pot. You just want to get the butter to melt and the sugar to dissolve. It’s a light brown when it’s ready and is a tad thick and heavy.

I actually did a lot of shopping in international foods for this recipe. If you need to buy sesame seeds skip the spice aisle and go to the Asian Food section. You will get four times as many seeds for less cost and these were just down from the Hispanic Food at Walmart.

Coat the cereal mix with the honey sauce in the bowl. Stir in the sesame seeds.

Spread it all out on a large jelly roll pan and bake. I baked this for an hour, stirring every 15 minutes, but it doesn’t really brown up much. You are really just cooking the honey mixture in to the other ingredients.

You can also cook this right in your slow cooker on low for an hour instead of the oven. Check out how to do that in our Slow Cooker Chex Mix Recipe.

Once the hour is up, push the mix close together on the sheet and allow it to cool. You want to break it up in lumps to eat although mine was a tad soft this time around to do that. Either way, it’s yummy.

Also, keep your eyes open for these new Don Victor products coming to a store near you soon! Whipped honey with cinnamon, chocolate and honey plus a wonderful Spanish olive oil that my kids love.

I bet Santa would love some Honey Sesame Snack Mix on the “cookie” plate this year.
