Open Acoustic Jam: Bring your acoustic instruments to the Detroit Lakes Public Library for an unplugged jam session, starting at 5 p.m. All experience levels are welcome to this supportive and family-friendly event. Necklace Making Class: Artist Barb Owen-Borger will be presenting a class on creating a customized beach sand and UV resin necklace from 5:30-8:30 p.m. in the Holmes Art Cellar, located in the basem*nt of the Historic Holmes Theatre at 806 Summit Ave., Detroit Lakes. There will be a variety of pendant styles to choose from, and the $65 fee not only covers all supplies, but also a complimentary pair of post earrings to match your necklace. AARP Driver Safety Class: The Detroit Lakes Public Library will host an AARP Driver Safety 4-Hour Refresher Class from 12:30-4:30 p.m. You do not need to be a AARP Member to attend but do need to have had the initial 8 Hour Safe Driving class as required by the Minnesota Department of Motor Vehicles to participate. Tamarac Sunday Movie: A free screening of the family-friendly, nature-themed movie, "Born in the Rockies, Part 1: First Steps," will be held at 2 p.m. in the Visitor Center at Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge. From early spring to late summer, follow new animal mothers through the trials of raising a family in the Rocky Mountains. Cranes migrate north to give birth, a bison mother protects her calf from threats, and young mountain goats learn to climb. Run time is approximately 55 minutes. All are welcome. Memorial Day Parade/Program: Detroit Lakes' annual Memorial Day Parade gets underway at 10 a.m., proceeding from Veterans Memorial Parkway to Washington Avenue, then south to the City Park. The parade will be followed by a program in the Detroit Lakes Pavilion, with speakers including American Legion Chaplain Darlene Olson and VFW Chaplain Gary Rehborg.

Will Weaver Author Visit: The Detroit Lakes Library Club will host a 2 p.m. visit with Minnesota author Will Weaver at the Detroit Lakes Public Library, 1000 Washington Ave. Weaver will be discussing his latest book, "Power and Light," which is set in 1806 and follows a family's emigration from Norway to North Dakota. Free and open to the public.

Medicare Basics 101: Come to the Detroit Lakes Public Library (1000 Washington Ave.) at 5 p.m. for a free educational presentation on the basics of Medicare, facilitated by UCare's Sharon Notch. Turf Wars Racing: Summer Turf Wars Racing comes to the Becker County Fairgrounds in Detroit Lakes from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Registration starts at 8 a.m., racing at 11 a.m. Spectator admission is $10; racing registration is $50, or $20 for kids in class 12 and under. Head-to-head style racing for all ages, from 0-250cc bikes and quads on up to open mods, which will offer a $1,000 cash prize for the champion.

Multi-day and Recurring Events

Street Faire at the Lakes: Detroit Lakes' annual Street Faire at the Lakes is coming, with more than 130 arts and crafts booths, delicious "Faire Food," a beer garden, live music, kids' activities and a host of other festival fun. Hours are Friday, May 31, from 10 a.m.-7 p.m., and Saturday, June 1, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. For a full schedule, including live music, visit DLStreetFaire.com or follow @DLStreetFaire on Facebook.

Tuesdays in the Park: Every Tuesday night from June through August, starting June 4, Fuller Center for Housing will serve hamburgers, hot dogs, brats, beans, potato salad and beverages in the Detroit Lakes City Park from 5:30 to 7 p.m.; cost is a free will donation. Following the meal, live music begins at 7 p.m. under the bandshell and lasts for approximately an hour, though some performers do continue to play a little later into the evening. Bring a lawn chair or a blanket, as bench seating is limited. In case of inclement weather, both the picnic and the concert will be moved inside the Pavilion. A full music schedule is available at dlccc.org/outdoormusic/331707.html. Though the music is free, donations to support the artists are gratefully accepted.

Master Gardening Clinics: The Becker County Master Gardeners will host their weekly Plant, Pest and Gardening Clinics, every Wednesday from May through September, from 9 a.m. to noon at the local University of Minnesota Extension Office, which is located at 1120 8th St. SE in Detroit Lakes. Bring your plant, pest, disease or gardening questions to them for helpful solutions and ideas. Samples would be helpful for answering specific questions. Shady Hollow Season Opener: The Shady Hollow Flea Market will have its season opener on Memorial Day weekend, May 25-27. Sleeping Bags Needed: The Holy Rosary Knights of Columbus in Detroit Lakes are collecting sleeping bags for distribution to those in need. Anyone who has a new or used, functional sleeping bag (i.e., the zipper works) can drop them off at the Becker County Food Pantry, 610 Terry St., Detroit Lakes, anytime between 8 a.m.-3 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Holmes Art Cellar Open Studio: Come join members of the Holmes Artist Collective at the Art Cellar every Thursday from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Work on a project, start something new, or just come to spend some time with area artists. Various art events will also be scheduled during this time throughout the year; suggestions for activities or other ideas to include are welcome. Free and open to all; no need to pre-register. This open studio is also held concurrently with monthly meetings of the Holmes Artist Collective, which are held on the second Thursday of every month.

Life Drawing Open Studio: Life drawing, also sometimes known as figure drawing or gesture drawing, is the drawing of the human form in various poses and levels of detail. Join Holmes Artist Collective facilitators in the Holmes Art Cellar every Friday morning from 10-11:30 a.m. through the end of 2024 for some networking and creativity. Open to artists of all skill levels; all media welcome, but you will need to bring your own supplies. No cost to attend, and no registration necessary. The Holmes Art Cellar is located in the basem*nt of the Historic Holmes Theatre at 806 Summit Ave., Detroit Lakes.

Grace Cafe: Grace Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes will be serving lunch every Wednesday from 12-1 p.m. The lunch is open to all in the Detroit Lakes area; admission is a free-will donation. Guests are welcome to stay after the meal to play games or cards.

Grace Food Pantry: Grace Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes will be operating a food pantry during its regular office hours, 9 a.m.- noon Monday through Friday. Anyone in need can come in and pick up some food. Donations will also be accepted.

Farmers Market: The Lakes Area Farmers Market will be open every Tuesday and Saturday this summer in Detroit Lakes' Peoples Park from 10 a.m.-1 p.m., starting May 18. Come shop with your favorite returning vendors, or discover some new ones, until 1 p.m. Vendors accept EBT cards and food checks to be used for fresh fruit and vegetables. Celebrate Recovery: The Celebrate Recovery group meets every Tuesday, 6:30-8 p.m. at Christian Fellowship Church, 28048 Meadow Drive, Detroit Lakes, to take the next steps on the "Road to Recovery: Eight Principles Based on the Beatitudes, Twelve Steps and their Biblical Comparison." Many struggle with alcoholism, divorce, sexual abuse, codependency, domestic violence, drug addiction, food and gambling addictions. Celebrate Recovery is a tried and proven format to help you walk through life's struggles. Men and women meet in a large group format, then break off into smaller discussion groups; men with men, women with women. Come as you are. No cost. We are here to help. Caring Cup Grief Support: The Caring Cup, a gathering of community members who are dealing with the loss of a loved one, will meet at the David-Donehower Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes on the second Wednesday of every month; the Furey Funeral Home in Frazee on every third Wednesday, and West-Kjos Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes on every fourth Wednesday. HR Connect: The Detroit Lakes Chamber is hosting an opportunity for human resources professionals, business owners and managers to connect, every first Thursday of the month at 8:15 a.m. at the Chamber office at 700 Summit Ave. Discuss human resource topics, share best practices and review data to help attract, retain and grow the workforce for the lakes region. Event is free for Chamber members, $10 for non-members.

Library Storytime: The Detroit Lakes Public Library offers weekly Preschool Storytime sessions every Thursday, and Family Storytime every Saturday, both at 10:30 a.m. Preschoolers and their caregivers/families are invited to join library staff for stories, flannel boards, finger plays, songs and more. This early literacy experience explores a different theme each week and is a way to encourage young children to enjoy reading. Call 218-847-2168 for more information.

Baby Bounce: Songs, stories, and action poems for infants, toddlers and their caregivers are offered every Monday at the Detroit Lakes Public Library at 10:30 a.m. Program runs about a half hour including playtime and chatting with other caregivers. Overeaters Anonymous: A 12-step program for those who struggle in their relationship with food, Overeaters Anonymous continues to meet at noon every Tuesday at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Detroit Lakes.
