What is Chinese Tofu Pudding?
Chinese Tofu Pudding is a delicious popular Chinese dessert served at dessert cafe's and restaurants. This dish is made of chilled soft silken tofu in a sweet sugar broth with a hint of ginger. It's a quick, easy and simple recipe to make this at home with minimal ingredients. This dessert can also be served warm or cold.
I absolutely adore this dish! It's probably my all-time favourite Chinese dessert if I had to pick just one. The contrasting temperatures between the cold silky tofu in that hot broth is the main reason why I enjoy it so much. Also the plain silky taste of the tofu is the perfect pair to the sweet gingery broth.
This dessert triggers many wonderful memories for me as it is commonly made for a celebration in Chinese culture. I hope it also brings back good memories for you too!

How to make Chinese Tofu Pudding
Boil Sweet Broth
First in a small pot, add 3 cups of water and bring it a boil. Then add ginger slices, Chinese Rock Sugar and brown sugar. Mix, cover and reduce to a rolling simmer for 10 minutes or until the sugar has dissolved completely.
Divide Silken Tofu
Meanwhile divide the chilled silken tofu between your serving bowls.
Serve
Once the sweet broth is ready, ladle some into each bowl. Enjoy immediately or serve cold.
Storage & Reheating
The leftover broth and silken tofu will last up to 4 days stored in individual airtight containers in the fridge. To enjoy, you can reheat the broth on the stovetop in a small pot on medium heat or serve chilled with the chilled tofu.
Expert Tips
- Keep the silken tofu chilled until you're ready to serve. The contrast of the hot sweet broth over the cold tofu is really so delicious!
- Make sure the rock sugar has completely dissolved while simmering.
- Enjoy immediately to get the full effect of the delicious chilled tofu in the hot broth. Otherwise the hot broth will cook the tofu a bit.
