This Chicken Souvlaki is a healthy and delicious take on the classic with a simple homemade marinade! This version is heathly, paleo, AIP, Whole30 and keto-friendly.

What is Chicken Souvlaki?

Chicken Souvlaki is a traditional Greek dish where chicken breast is cubed and marinated in a delicious zesty marinade, before being grilled to perfection! Chicken Souvlaki was one of my favorite dishes growing up! I always looked forward to it in the summer, during grilling season. I seriously had to come up with my own, healthier take on it!

Traditionally, greek chicken souvlaki is made with gluten, dairy, nightshades and refined oils, but this version is made free of all those things, all while retaining its delicious, traditional greek flavor!

Why is this Greek Chicken Souvlaki the best?

  • It’s made with nourishing ingredients. It’s made free of gluten, dairy, nightshades, and refined oils!
  • It’s so easy to make. Seriously, just marinate the chicken and grill it, and voila, you’ve got restaurant-quality food right at home!

The Ingredients for Chicken Souvlaki

  • Chicken Breast. The star of the dish!
  • Olive Oil, Lemon, Garlic, Parsley, Dill, Onion Powder, Oregano, Sea Salt & Black Pepper. These all come together to create the classic, flavorful marinade for the souvlaki! You can omit the black pepper for AIP.

The Tools You’ll Need to make Greek Chicken Souvlaki

  • Skewers. You can either use metal skewers or bamboo skewers.
  • A grill surface. Either use an outdoor grill, or a cast iron grill pan
  • Tongs. You for sure want to use tongs whenever you grill skewers to rotate them safely!

How do you make the marinade with Chicken Souvlaki?

  • Combine the ingredients. Olive Oil, Lemon, Garlic, Parsley, Dill, Onion Powder, Oregano, Sea Salt & Black Pepper, Olive Oil and Lemon.
  • Add the diced chicken and toss in the marinade. Set in the fridge for at least an hour!
  • Prepare the marinade.
  • Skewer the chicken: After the chicken has marinated, skewer the chicken breast on the skewers and set aside.
  • Grill the chicken: Prepare the grill top (either using an outdoor grill or a stove top cast iron grill pan) by lightly greasing with oil and bring to a high heat. Add the skewers to the grill and grill for 2-3 minutes on each side. Rotate until the chicken is fully grilled and the internal temperature reads 165 F.

What can you serve with Chicken Souvlaki?

Typically, you would order this dish with something like roasted veggies, rice, tzatziki sauce, pita bread, or a side salad. Here are some ideas for what you can serve it with…

  • Roasted veggies of choice
  • Cauliflower Tabbouleh Salad
  • Any side salad
  • Cauliflower rice
  • Tzatziki sauce
  • Pita bread (if tolerated)

Can you bake Greek Chicken Souvlaki instead of grilling?

Technically, you can! However, you’ll miss the grill marks and the distinct grilled flavor, so I’ll always opt for the grill.

Delightful. I made over six pounds of chicken with this recipe x6 and our dog snagged a whole skewer. He liked it too. 🙂 But there were only 8 people eating and we polished off EVERYTHING before I was even full. Probably a good thing. 😉 very tender and overwhelmingly delicious! My family loves everything I have made using your recipes. Please, keep cranking them out!
