In 1996, Callebaut merged with French chocolate maker Cacao Barry to form the Barry Callebaut group. However, both chocolate brands still remain separate under the Barry Callebaut umbrella, with Callebaut as its premium couverture chocolate brand for Belgian Chocolate.

The Barry Callebaut Group is organized into 5 different Regions: Region WEU (Western Europe), Region CEE (Central & Eastern Europe), Region NAFTA (North America), Region LATAM (Latin America), and Region AMEA (Asia Pacific, Middle East & Africa).

Callebaut lost his company, Chocolaterie Bernard Callebaut, in 2010 after it hit financial trouble and went into receivership. It had 30 stores at the time. He opened a new company location, Papa Chocolat, in late 2011 but that too eventually ceased operations. And in 2015 he declared personal bankruptcy.

The Barry Callebaut Company began with the Callebaut family back in 1850. This highly entrepreneurial family founded a chocolate company in 1911 to add to its existing dairy and brewery.

The Valrhona definitely wins in terms of convenience and percent cocoa, but the Callebaut wins in terms of flavor and texture (oddly enough). This is a richer tasting chocolate, which I think is due to it having more cocoa butter than the Valrhona.

The Barry Callebaut Group, headquartered in Switzerland, resulted from the merger between Belgian chocolate maker Callebaut and French chocolate producer Cacao Barry in 1996. The Group has been listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange since 1998.

As a result we ensure that all ingredients from regions at high risk of child labor involvement are certified or verified sustainable. Barry Callebaut's own factory sites comply with SEDEX and regular SMETA audits are conducted which cover (Child) Labor, Health & Safety, Environment and Business Ethics standards.

Barry Callebaut will supply approximately an additional 14,000 tonnes a year of liquid chocolate and cocoa liquor to Cadbury Schweppes' production facilities in Poland.
