Are there different Types of Kringles? What is a Kringle? | O&H Danish Bakery (2024)

When you visit Racine, don’t be surprised if one of the first questions you hear is, “What’s your favorite Kringle?” After all, you are visiting America’s Kringle Capital. Kringles have been popular in this area for generations, thanks to the Danish bakers who settled here in the 1800s. Today, Kringle is the official state pastry of Wisconsin and check out our Kringle inspired by the best of Wisconsin.

What is a Kringle?

Are there different Types of Kringles? What is a Kringle? | O&H Danish Bakery (1)

It’s a Danish pastry made from dough that has butter folded in and many layers, making it light and fluffy. It’s packed with various fillings, such as fruits and/or nuts, before being baked to a golden brown and drizzled with icing. Popular fillings include almond, raspberry, and cream cheese. But like any team with a passion, a good Danish Kringle bakery will often get creative with seasonal fillings such as pumpkin, cranberry, and key lime. Making a Kringle is a time consuming and labor intensive process as the making of the dough is done over a series of days.

Not surprisingly, this authentic Danish pastry has gained a substantial global following, having been featured on many cooking and talk shows. Moreover, O&H’s Danish Bakery’s Kringles were declared “delicious” by President Obama during his visit to our bakery in 2010.
